Unity Through Education is a women of color-led nonprofit organization rooted in the heart of Houston, Texas, committed to addressing and reducing the economic inequalities faced by students in our community. Founded on the belief that every child deserves equal access to education and resources—regardless of their zip code, background, or household income—we aim to create meaningful change through grassroots action and community-driven solutions.
Our Mission
To level the educational playing field for under-resourced students in the Houston area by providing essential school supplies, access to academic support, and long-term opportunities that help students thrive—inside and outside the classroom.
What We’re Doing Now
Our current focus is on gearing up for the upcoming school year by:
- Raising funds and collecting supplies to distribute fully stocked backpacks to students in need.
- Offering scholarship assistance to help families access private tutoring services, ensuring students receive the one-on-one academic support they deserve.
We believe that small acts of support can lead to big transformations—and we’re just getting started.
Our Team
Perla Licona
President
Perla Licona is a dedicated professional, wife, and mother of three daughters. Her oldest daughter, Ellen, is the founder of Unity Through Education Inc., a nonprofit organization committed to providing educational support and resources to underprivileged students.
Perla earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, laying the foundation for her successful career in business and finance. She is the owner of her own bookkeeping and tax preparation firm, where she provides personalized financial services to individuals and small businesses in her community.
In addition to managing her business, Perla serves as the President of Unity Through Education Inc., working alongside her daughter to advance the organization’s mission of empowering students through education. Her passion for supporting her family, community, and educational initiatives is at the heart of everything she does.
